Hard & Soft-Style Kettlebell Swinging — Try it Both Ways

Hard-and soft-style kettlebell training are both fantastic training approaches. One method focuses on building strength and tension; the other, endurance and relaxation.

I mean that as literally as you can take it: In hardstyle training, you generally try to engage as much muscle as possible to build as much strength as possible. In soft-style training, on the other hand, you try to move as efficiently as possible, conserving your energy because the sets are long and aerobic. There's an entire sport built around this style of training, called kettlebell sport or Girevoy sport.

The best way I can tell you is to show you.

Here's me teaching the hinge, or hard-style, swing. As you can see, it's all about that pow factor, glutes and guts and a snappyness to it all:

Then, on the other hand — the complete and total other hand — you have the soft-style swing.

Here's my friend, master of kettlebell sport Jessica DiBiase (also a cofounder of Kettleguard wrist guards, my fave), here with a BRAND-NEW video teaching you how to do a soft-style swing.

It's curvy, casual cardio. (Completely different from the burly hard-style swing, right?!)

Follow along with Jess's easy-to-track cues and learn a totally new way to engage with your body and this instrument.

Give it a try, and let us know you're practicing by tagging us — she's at @ickbjessand I'm @jensinkler — to come take a look and cheer you on IG. I'll be practicing right alongside you.

Speaking of practicing, I'm teaming up with Jess next month for a combination hard-style/soft-style combination workshop in Texas.

Where: College Station, TX, at Piranha Fitness Studio
When: October 27
Early bird price: $299 (goes to $399 Sept. 27)

More details hereHmu with any questions.

And finally, if you're excited to put your newfound kettlebell knowledge to work, our Lift Weights Faster Daily (LWFD) program might be a great fit for you. Never stress about what to do, how to do it, or how often to do it. For $12/month, just open your inbox and get to work.
